Whalebone Niho Taniwha
Description
Whalebone Niho Taniwha.
In Te Ao Māori, the Niho Taniwha pendant represents the teeth of the taniwha, a revered guardian of our waterways and landscapes. It is a powerful symbol of guardianship, strength, and courage, connecting the wearer to a heritage of resilience and steadfast protection.
All whalebone used in my carvings is ethically and legally sourced here in Aotearoa New Zealand, honoring traditional tikanga and harvested strictly from natural beach strandings in accordance with local regulations. Each piece respects the rich heritage of the land and sea, ensuring these treasures are created with the utmost care and reverence.
Taking care of your Taonga
Wearing your Pounamu close to your skin can help it maintain its polish. This is because it naturally absorbs oils from your skin, which will give it a special connection to you.
To further care for your taonga, you can oil it using any natural household oils or fats such as
- olive oil
- coconut oil
- vegetable oil
- tallow
Doing so will help ensure that it remains sparkling and beautiful for many years to come.
