Pakohe hei manaia
Description
A large Pakohe (NZ argillite) manaia set atop a manaia‑waka form, hand‑carved and fully detailed on both faces — see photos for the double‑sided design.
This contemporary Little Shop of Taonga piece is crafted from genuine New Zealand Pakohe, a stone traditionally prized for its strength and durability. Māori once used Pakohe for tools and adzes due to its hardness and ability to hold a sharp edge.
Found within the Nelson–Marlborough region — including Rangitoto (D’Urville Island), the Whangamoa mineral belt, and the upper Maitai, Wairoa, and Motueka Rivers — each stone carries its own natural character.
This taonga comes with two interchangeable hand‑braided cords (black and brown) with an adjustable tie, and is presented in a custom‑made laser‑cut gift box.
This taonga measures 8.5cm x 5cm.

Taking care of your Taonga
Wearing your Pounamu close to your skin can help it maintain its polish. This is because it naturally absorbs oils from your skin, which will give it a special connection to you.
To further care for your taonga, you can oil it using any natural household oils or fats such as
- olive oil
- coconut oil
- vegetable oil
- tallow
Doing so will help ensure that it remains sparkling and beautiful for many years to come.
